A simple but interesting idea of course.

I think some of the following refinements would be necessary for any results to be interesting.

1)Only give players credit for the goals scored/against while they were actually on the field, adjusting for playing minutes. Of course, this would require looking at all the game logs, which I think you said you were not keen on doing.

2)Collapse the magnitude of goals conceded late in the game that do not change the momentum of the game. For example, if a team is ahead 2-0 and gets a third goal late against the run of play, this goal is likely not as important as the other goals that preceded it.

3)Adjust for home/away and opponent context.

This could potentially make loadsamoney. Fantasy (rotisserie) football is a big thing in England, with many major newspapers offering big prizes in their competitons.

The main problem is, as we found out some years ago around Italia '90 time, that soccer fans don’t like to read very much. This may have changed, given the sales of of various soccer books have been better than before, and this would be perceived as useful by fantasy players.

I know this might not be quite what Rich was after, but I thought he might be interested if he didn’t know it already.
