BAP For Beginners (July 30, 2003)

A metric called "Base out percentage", which some of you may know from reading Koppett with "Bases Gained".

While this has validity on a team level, it's really a problem for individual players. The most important is the context of the base-out state. We know from the Linear Weights by 24 base-out states that every event has wildly different values, based on the base and out states the players happens to find himself in. A great player finding himself in key situations will be able to leverage his talents to greater effect. This doesn't tell us so much about him as it also does about the opportunity to do something. Eddie Murray is a good example for a hitter here.

Maybe, to make it clearer, I should create an "LI" for the 24 base-out states?
